Environmental Lead Inspectors
Environmental Lead Inspector Technician

Lead-Safe Contractor
Lead-Safe Remodeler/Renovator
Lead-Safe Supervisor
Lead-Safe Worker

All applications shall include a certification by the applicant that his/her certification or other authorization to perform environmental lead inspections has not been suspended or revoked by any other jurisdiction and that no enforcement actions by any local, county, State, or Federal agency are pending against the applicant.

Environmental Lead Inspector Certification    top

To achieve an Environmental Lead Inspector Certification, the following must be accomplished by the applicant:

  1. Successful completion of the Lead Inspector Initial training course within 12 months prior of initial application
  2. Successful completion of both the State written and practicum exam
  3. Meet one of the following conditions:

    1. Be certified as a Certified Industrial Hygienist or other professional certification specified by the Department of Health

    2. Have a Bachelor's degree or higher in engineering, physical, or biological science, and complete at least 20 Comprehensive Environmental Lead Inspections and at least 5 Clearance Inspections under the supervision of an Environmental Lead Inspector during any one calendar year period in at least 15 different residential dwellings in Rhode Island

    3. Have a High School diploma or GED, and compete at least 20 Comprehensive Environmental Lead Inspections and at least 5 Clearance Inspections under the supervision of an Environmental Lead Inspector during any one calendar year period in at least 15 different residential dwellings in Rhode Island and at least 2 years of field experience in a related environmental field, included, but not limited to, lead, asbestos, radon, or other environmental remediation work

    4. High School diploma or GED, and completion of at least 40 Comprehensive Environmental Lead Inspections and at least 10 Clearance Inspections under the supervision of an Environmental Lead Inspector during any two calendar year periods in at least 30 different residential dwellings in Rhode Island

  4. Call Donna at 222-7750 to make an appointment to obtain license
  5. Submit the following at the appointment:
    • Original training document (copies will not be accepted)
    • 2-day state exam test results
    • Recent Blood Lead Test results
    • A signed and completed application provided by the Department of Health
  6. Pay the Application Fee ($150)

Environmental Lead Inspector Technician Certification    top

To achieve an Environmental Lead Inspector Technician Certification, the following must be accomplished by the applicant:

  1. Successful completion of an initial training course within 12 months prior of initial application
  2. Successful completion of both the State written and practicum exam
  3. High School diploma or GED
  4. Call Donna at 222-7750 to make an appointment to obtain license
  5. Submit the following at the appointment:
    • Original training document (copies will not be accepted)
    • 2-day state exam test results
    • Recent Blood Lead Test results
    • A signed and completed application provided by the Department of Health
  6. Pay the Application Fee ($75.00)

Lead-Safe Remodeler/Renovator    top

  1. Successful completion of the Remodeler/Renovator Course within 12 months prior of initial application
  2. Call Donna at 222-7750 to make an appointment to obtain license
  3. Submit the following at the appointment:
    • Original training document (copies will not be accepted)
    • A signed and completed application provided by the Department of Health
  4. Pay the Application Fee ($25)

Lead-Safe Contractor    top

  1. Must be licensed as a General Contractor with the State of Rhode Island
  2. Successful completion of an initial training course within 12 months prior of initial application
  3. Successful completion of both the State written and practicum exam
  4. High School diploma or GED
  5. Call Donna at 222-7750 to make an appointment to obtain license
  6. Submit the following at the appointment:
    • Original training document (copies will not be accepted)
    • 2-day state exam test results
    • Recent Blood Lead Test results
    • General Contractor Card
    • A signed and completed application provided by the Department of Health
  7. Pay the Application Fee ($150.00)

Lead-Safe Supervisor    top

  1. Successful completion of an initial training course within 12 months prior of initial application
  2. Successful completion of both the State written and practicum exam
  3. High School diploma or GED
  4. Call Donna at 222-7750 to make an appointment to obtain license
  5. Submit the following at the appointment:
    • Original training document (copies will not be accepted)
    • 2-day state exam test results
    • Recent Blood Lead Test results
    • A signed and completed application provided by the Department of Health
  6. Pay the Application Fee ($75.00)

Lead-Safe Worker    top

  1. Successful completion of an initial training course within 12 months prior of initial application
  2. Successful completion of both the State written and practicum exam
  3. High School diploma or GED
  4. Call Donna at 222-7750 to make an appointment to obtain license
  5. Submit the following at the appointment:
    • Original training document (copies will not be accepted)
    • 2-day state exam test results
    • Recent Blood Lead Test results
    • A signed and completed application provided by the Department of Health
